Ready to experience "the fastest tablets in the world?" Well you'll have to wait just a little longer. Archos announced that their new 80 G9 tablet would go on presale through Archos.com on September 20th. Sadly, this SKU, which will be available at most online e-tailers on September 30th, will be the 8GB model whose dual-core OMAP 4430 is clocked at 1 GHz. The fire breathing, speed demon SKUs, whose OMAP 4460 SoCs are clocked at 1.5 GHz, won't be available until October.
The French manufacturer is looking to make big waves with these devices, solidifying a spot in the cut-throat tablet market. If you'll recall, Archos will be offering magnetic storage along with the typical flash variety, which paired with Archos history of excellent codec support could make this the tablet of choice for media savvy users. Based on the press release, Android 3.2 will be on hand, with Android Market access at the ready, and no skinning mentioned. Pricing remains competitive, the top of the line Archos G9 101 1.5 GHz, 250 GB model tops out at just $469, a price that ducks the lesser specced Galaxy Tab 10.1 by $30. We'll know just how well these beasts compete when they launch in October.

not to be a party pooper, but isnt android the same where you need to register to be able to download apps? (market)Dark Legion - Sunday, September 18, 2011 - link
You need a Gmail account, in my eyes a big difference from having to register the product though a computer program to be able to use it.kmmatney - Sunday, September 18, 2011 - link
The iPad is only restricted if you want it to be. I was able to Jailbreak mine in, oh, about 60 seconds. Any gripes I had with the iPad are now solved (My biggest gripe was not being able to password the email App - that was solved by Lockdown Pro). If Apple controls you, its your own fault. The only problem is that my iPad2 is too popular with the rest of the family, so I need to get another one.Diesel Donkey - Friday, September 16, 2011 - link
An Android tablet with an aspect ratio useful for something other than watching widescreen movies? I don't believe it!Vinny DePaul - Friday, September 16, 2011 - link
Why is Archos not sending some units to Anandtech for review? I am sure the units are ready. Are they afraid the reviews would be bad? It looks good on paper but so is Notion Ink. Now everyone knows Notion Ink = :(I know the screen will be good. The last several Archos models have pretty bad screen. The most important things are the screen and the weight. I use my tablet as book replacement and I love my Samsung Galaxy pad. It is lighter and brighter than iPad2. I am looking forward for something even lighter with better resolution, contrast and brightness.

We're expecting samples of the 1.5 GHz model in October. As for the screen, it's the most expensive component after the processor, but we've seen examples of good screens on affordable devices before so we'll hold out judgment till those units roll in.Jason

I really just want Archos 4.3 and Archos 5 with new hardware/new OS. Possibly with a phone antenna on Virgin Mobile? Even without the phone I'll want it. 9 inches is too big to be really portable though, I already have a laptop thanks.Technogies - Saturday, September 17, 2011 - link

I'm surprised no one pointed out the ridiculous disparity between the storage sizes. 8GB, 16GB, and then....250GB??? wtf....is the 250GB a hdd? because 250GB NAND at that price is an unbelievably good bargain. Or is it a typo for 25GB?Dark Legion - Sunday, September 18, 2011 - link
Yes, it's an hdd and was mentioned in this article and in the last one that reported details on the specs. The 250GB is also a little thicker because of it...
