    Finally, nice work.
  • gnx - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

+1 for both "Finally" and for "nice work"
  • Sabresiberian - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

"Nice work" of course, but I don't get the "finally" part. Did they make some kind of promise that they were behind on?
  • wifiwolf - Tuesday, July 16, 2013 - link

Don't need to promise, users expect it. We are AT readers for many years and use smartphones for at least 4 years. Responsive design is a must for any website ATM.
  • vol7ron - Tuesday, July 16, 2013 - link

Seeing how Anand tested the original iPads until his hands hurt, and other mobile testers test against Anandtech all the time, I would say they are also AT readers - they read and review the same articles and comments - and most likely wanted something like this for as long, if not longer.

However, I proposed a better comment system, similar to DailyTech, but more like the Stack Exchange network, which I would prefer to see implemented. AT articles bring a lot of information, but you can learn a lot from the readers/commenters that also work in the field.
  • PalmerWoodrow - Friday, July 19, 2013 - link

    "Responsive" doesn't tell us anything.
  • Montago - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

This is so freaking nice !
  • xinthius - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

I feel rather guilty for having Adblock installed now.

Looks solid on my HTC One X, good work!
  • karasaj - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Just disable it for AT. Their ads aren't exactly intrusive. :P

Redesign looks fantastic y'all, everything is great! I always wondered when that mobile site was coming.
  • turbosloth - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Love it guys, looks hot on my Nexus 4. Box have set you up with a proper treat there :)
  • crazylocha - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Works great on DX2 w/ Dolphin(+jetpack). Super smooth switch to landscape and all. Like it!

Is there going to be an addition to the menu for Pipeline/Dailytech/Etc?
  • skiboysteve - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

2nd this. I visit on my Lumia 920 regularly and its nice to see pipeline and major stories. Now I can only see major stories no matter if I set desktop or mobile mode for my user agent
  • TrackSmart - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Agreed! There is no obvious way to view pipeline stories, which is unfortunate.

Maybe they should just fall in line with the "regular" stories. You could differentiate them with a "Pipeline" logo, but they would fall in the normal article list.

Overall, the mobile views are a wonderful addition and function well.
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Pipeline stories are visible on all tag pages, it's just the front page that we don't have an ideal solution in place for yet. We talked about adding another dropdown for pipeline, will discuss it with our developer again.
  • jibz - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Why not just let us see the desktop, non responsive site when we select a desktop user agent? I prefer it this way, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Responsive designs don't give you a different view based on user agent string, instead they deliver a different view based on reported browser resolution.

If you want the desktop view, simply set the desktop cookie under About on the mobile view.
  • jibz - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Ok, didn't see the Full website button there. Good to know. The user agent toggle is simply a shortcut so I don't have to find that button in every single web site. I let my browser tell the website if I prefer the mobile, responsive view or the classic site.
  • TrackSmart - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

That is unfortunate. I always hit the front page to see if there are new stories (of any kind). I would not think to check individual sections (e.g. Smartphones) to find articles that are may (or may not) be missing from the front page. It would be too much work.

I'll be curious to see how you guys approach this problem. As it stand, content is "hidden" behind those category walls and is unlikely to be viewed by folks with similar browsing behavior to my own. It is too much work to check each and every section and scan for something that looks new, but isn't on the front page.

A dropdown isn't a great fix for this problem, but it would be better than the current situation.

I think the fundamental question is whether Pipeline stories need to be physically separated from 'normal' stories for those reading on mobile platforms. Or can you find a clever way to distinguish them.

Some random ideas to get the brainstorming started:
    - Pipeline icon/logo instead of a photo that directly relates to the article?
    - Different color text and background?
    - Larger box for 'big' stories and smaller box for Pipeline stories?
  • eanazag - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

I miss the pipeline too. But I can certainly deal with setting the view back to desktop. I had no issues with your website not being mobile designed.
  • kenthaman - Tuesday, July 16, 2013 - link

I think another dropdown would make sense. I didn't see any way to check for podcast otherwise.
  • n0x1ous - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

looks great. Huge improvement. Ultimately I would still prefer a dedicated mobile app but this largely makes up for it.
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Thanks for the feedback. We were actually talking about this over the weekend. I'm curious as to what makes you say that you'd prefer a dedicated mobile app.
  • domboy - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

I agree, why does it need to be an app? This solution seems so much better than having to have an app for a website.
  • n0x1ous - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Share link/post type integration that I use frequently if I want to text or email an article to a friend. Easier than having to copy url etc etc.

When I use my mobile browser I prefer the full site. I realize I can still get that so these are just nitpicks. Ultimately, I read anandtech every day of my life because of the quality and content of the writing and that won't be changing regardless of these formats. Cheers Anand. Your the best in the biz.
  • crazylocha - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

As an example of app goodness... The current mobile issue with Pipe/Tweets/etc..
Bring app up to home (main page as shows mobile browser now)..
    sidescroll to pipeline...
again for Dailytech...(tapping article can be set in options to take you to browser or in app view, withtop of app button to go to webpage for further links, etc)
sidescroll again for tweets... (ability for app to retweet or post new tweet to conversation easier with app collaboration than browser, my understanding!)
and the ease of mobile gmail and other mail apps to send feedback, or to forward links, in all mobile OS's to be considered also.

If anyone can get their mobile app right, this site and their brains ought to blow away many dev's and set the standard.
  • Quidam67 - Tuesday, July 16, 2013 - link

I may be wrong, but in addition to a level of functional customization and design that is simply not possible via a web-browser, an app would offer at least the potential for better optimization/performance, especially in relation to network traffic. Frankly, here in NZ mobile streaming (outside of a wifi network) keeps me well away from my mobiles web-browser, but in most cases I find mobile apps (for example trademe, out equivalent of ebay) to be quite tolerable and usable. Anyway, just want to say Anand I've been following your website for years beyond count, and am filled with admiration of where you began to where you are now. Keep up the great work.
  • Zink - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

    Nice!
  • smithkt - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

I don't see a way to jump to the forums from these mobile pages. You should consider adding a link somewhere in one of the menus.
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Done, check the home menu up top :)
  • smithkt - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Nice. Now you just need to get rid of the left hand menu when looking at the forums and I will be a happy guy. Takes up valuable real estate for navigation which already has other methods.
  • mrob27 - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

This is really cool -- I can view the different layouts on my PC using windows of different widths. No user agent spoofing required!
  • skiboysteve - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

wow agreed. Just resize your window and it changes on the fly. dont even have to refresh. so cool!

    thanks Anand and Box!
  • quiksilvr - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

    No podcast section?
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Added Podcast link to the Home menu at the top :)
  • Firebat5 - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Thanks for making a mobile version of your site. It's much easier to read and navigate.
  • Chapbass - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Wow, looks awesome on my Galaxy Note 2, loads really quick too. AT just got a ton more enjoyable on mobile, IMO. Also looks great on my work ipad gen 3. One thing I noticed, I don't see a link for Forums or Bench, would be awesome to have personally. (yeah, I guess I could just favorite them, but it'd still be nice to have :D).

Great job, bravo to the Box devs as well, this looks excellent.
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Bench is there (try the home menu up top, or scroll down). Just added links for Forums and Podcast.
  • Rick83 - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Now if only the site would scale up as well.
Maybe a two-column or side-by-side layout might work to make use of all that currently useless horizontal space that everybody has on their 16:10/16:9 displays.

Considering how much horizontal scrolling most articles currently take, I'm seeing definite room for improvement on that front.
  • coder543 - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

    This is excellent!

My one complaint -- the nav icons in the top right corner (in the nav bar) are so low resolution. On high-PPI screens, they look blurry.

Otherwise, this is a huge step in the right direction!
  • Storkme - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Would it be possible to reveal some more technical details about the implementation? I'd be interested to know if it's purely responsive (same content in the DOM, restyled only using CSS/JS) or there is still some backend user-agent sniffing magic going on?
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

It is indeed purely responsive - we are restyling/hiding content on the fly, which is what enables you to see both tablet and desktop views depending on how you orient something like the iPad mini. The only exception are the ads which are loaded based on initial resolution target to avoid serving ads that will never be seen.
  • ananduser - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Anand...no more pipeline section. Make it all a single wall that would perpetuate as you scroll. Like the blog view of Gizmodo or Cnet's "load more stories" button or Tumblr's auto scroll. Why clutter the front page with different sections. Simple is best. Thanks!
  • blacks329 - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Fantastic job with the redesign and responsiveness, but I do find it a bit odd that it goes between desktop and mobile versions of the site when changing orientations.

I would much rather have the mobile design continued in landscape orientation on something like my iPad rather than it going to the desktop version.

But nonetheless, a welcome change to consuming AT on my phone or tablet. Kudos to everyone involved in the process.
  • makerofthegames - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

This is cool and all, but I'm disabling the mobile view for now.

I often browse in a half-window - effectively 960x1080. On the desktop version, that just means I have to side-scroll a bit to see the pipeline stories (which I only need to do if they're new - I can spot ones I've already read just from the fragment).

With the responsive design, though, instead of letting them be cut off, it just hides them. They're not moved anywhere, they don't get merged in with the other articles, they're just gone.

Until that gets fixed, I'm sticking with the desktop version. On my desktop, at least.
  • ashita - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

The first link to Box's site is missing the "http://" (1st paragraph) :)
  • uhuznaa - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Beautiful, responsive (in more than one way) and very well done. Until now I hated reading Anandtech on any mobile device, this will be different now.
  • chesterzen - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I just hate when websites force me into some downgraded experience because I went there on my phone. I feel like I'm being punished for using a mobile device. The regular site works just fine on my gs3... I'm baffled why I would want a lesser version or why effort goes into that at all.

    meh.
  • Touche - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

I agree. Why can't they respect my user agent setting?! I hate mobile versions with a passion. I hated them on my 2.6" N95 and I hate them now on my large smartphone. If I set a specific user agent, respect the damn thing. And I can't even change the setting in the About section because it doesn't work in Opera Mobile I'm using.
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

What device/OS/version of Opera Mobile are you using?
  • Touche - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

    Samsung Captivate Glide/2.3.5/Opera 11.50

It is an older version of Opera, but the smoothest one. I don't expect everything to work on it, as Opera is known for compatibility issues, but user agent should be respected. Dolphin's one wasn't respected either, but at least the About section works there.
  • Zandros - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Agreed. Double-tapping the text column worked perfectly well with the old design in portrait view, with the added benefit that I could zoom further to get a better look at pictures, slides and graphs.

Since I can't zoom now, graphs are virtually unreadable on my iPhone 5 in portrait, and I don't think turning it to horizontal every time is a good solution.
  • Anand Lal Shimpi - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

This is exactly why we allow for the ability to force the desktop view at all times. Scroll down to the bottom of the mobile view, under about you should see an option for requesting the desktop view.
  • Zandros - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Yeah, I got that (I might be misremembering, but it seems somewhat different to what it was before, double tap leaves a bit of the sidebar in view for some reason). I still think that it would be useful to get a good look at the graphs in portrait mode with the responsive design somehow.
  • Moizy - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

    Awesome! Nice work, thank you!
  • quiksilvr - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Where is the podcast option? I have to go to full site in About and click it on the top right on my phone.
  • quiksilvr - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Nevermind, had to click the home button which brings up a drop down menu. Odd placement but its better than going into desktop mode.
  • twin-pt - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

  • GauravDas27 - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

  • synaesthetic - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

I've been waiting for this for practically forever! I hate trying to wrangle websites intended for pointing devices like mice on a touchscreen.

    Lovely mobile site. :)
  • danstek - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

The AnandTech logo and the icons to the left of it are low res so there're a little blurry. Also, is there anyway to see pipeline articles? Otherwise, I'm definitely liking the new layout.
  • toyotabedzrock - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Works great except for one problem. It does not respect the browser calling for the desktop version of the site. Which means I cant see the Daily Tech news feed.

    I'm using Opera mobile 12.1x
  • g33kd0m - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

This new design is very nice indeed. Works great on the desktop and mobile. Seems to load faster as well.
  • adt6247 - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

  • eutectic - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Really impressive work on this. Have you rolled in any solutions for Retina/HiDPI assets, or is that still not mature enough to deploy on a news/review site?

  • Csfalcao - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

I just disabled it. I'm not a fan of responsive design: it disrupts the experience of the full browser, creating like a mirror site - and not a better one. You can see this in Anandtech too: 1st thing when I visit it (almost daily) I check the main article and then 2nd - Daily News (ok, Jason Mick's articles are shallow, but the news keep me updated) and then some twitter. Wheres's #2 and 3 in responsive?
Another bad bad thing is replacing the graphs bar for...colored boxes...very lame, just totally break the experience, the boxes are difficult to read and you have to keep think about the relationship between the score, the percentage etc terrible.
I think it's just better to have one site to all devices, just double tap and zoom the section you want to read.
A good thing is Anand partnership to some tech companies, in this case BOX. I prefer Dropbox, but BOX is OK. Just don't overuse the BOX logo all over the pages.
Have the option to turn off responsive is good.
I read Anand almost 8 years and this is the first time I have something bad to say about it. Sorry!
  • kgh00007 - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Great, but the text is still too small on mobile, smaller than every other web site I visit and increasing the browser don't size results in other websites text being huge and not much change in anandtech, please fix this!

I also miss the pipeline stories, so hope you come up with a solution for that, maybe a split screen with most recent pipelines above main stories. The pipeline stories seem to have more frequent updates and are the reason I check in at anandtech so often!

  • aryonoco - Monday, July 15, 2013 - link

Great job Anand, and thanks Box for their sponsorship. Also so glad you went with a responsive design as opposed to breaking the web.

It works brilliantly. Typing this now on my HTC One and even the comments section and posting comments works a treat.

I think not being able to view Pipeline is an issue for the casual user who stumbles upon your main page, that content is effectively hidden from them. Not an issue for me as they still show up in my RSS and that's how I follow AT, but I can see where others are coming from.
  • HYPhoenix - Tuesday, July 16, 2013 - link

    thank you.
  • Kill16by9TN - Tuesday, July 16, 2013 - link

For me as a desktop user the new design is a step backwards.
With the same browser window size as before I now lose the right hand column with the "PIPELINE STORIES" and "Dailytech News", unless I increase the browser width by a significant margin.
Apparently the main section of the page now requires a larger minimum width/character count per line, before text stops flowing and breaking into the next line. There is no horizontal scrollbar coming up as a possible compensation for this issue.
With two browsers side by side on a fHD screen, I now have more overlapping of those windows than before, reducing the usefulness of such a setup.

Very nice. My son who is a developer was just this weekend telling me about pushing his company to start offering responsive design sites and used anandtech as anexample of a site that he thought would benefit greatly from a responsive design update. Now all that is left is to implement a full screen width design.

Signed up for first time to make this comment. I very often look at AT on my iPad and the inability to pinch zoom or double tap to enlarge text is a serious flaw in the new design as it appears that viewing AT in landscape mode forces a desktop view which cannot be zoomed etc. Please can this be fixed
  • bobbozzo - Tuesday, July 16, 2013 - link

The new design mis-detects my laptop as a mobile device.

    OS: Fedora 17 64-bit
    Computer: Dell Latitude e6410 laptop
    Screen res: 1440x900
    Browser: FireFox 22

Furthermore, I get an error when clicking About - Show Full Site (it does work though, despite the error).

  • Red Storm - Tuesday, July 16, 2013 - link

I guess I'm the only one that does not like this new look at all. Maybe it's more view friendly for smaller iPhone screens, but I prefer the desktop view over this by far. Now the forums button is gone, as is the Pipeline and DailyTech boxes on the right.
  • Red Storm - Tuesday, July 16, 2013 - link

And now I can't even skip the mobile site and force load the desktop version by choice! :(
  • Kill16by9TN - Wednesday, July 17, 2013 - link

That's what I thought at first, too. You need to increase your browser's window width until the right-hand column pops back up. Strangely there is no H-scrollbar showing up, when the width is insufficient to display everything at once, instead stuff then just disappears.
As a mostly desktop (fHD) user, I don't like this new behavior either, since I now am forced into overlapping side by side windows.

  • MadMan007 - Thursday, July 18, 2013 - link

I didn't read all the comments to see if it was mentioned elsewhere, so here goes...

It's nice to have a mobile-friendly layout, but on my Nexus 4 some of the articles get *really* screwed up by ads that don't scale at all. So there will be a few words along the left, then a huge ad picture that takes up the rest of the screen, then the rest of the article text. It just looks horrible and makes the mobile site frustrating to use. Could you please move to real mobile ads instead of just putting the desktop site ads into the mobile version?
